50 Books Challenge
Feb. 2nd, 2013 12:19 pmJust so I can keep a list of all my suggestions for international authors and books I need to read this year:
British Isles (8):
Total: 26
Total Read: 0
I'm all set for English literature, but I would love to venture further into continental Europe. I also need to research some good Mexican novels, as well as descend further into South America. I'll snag some Mario Vargos Llosa and some Che Guevara, as well as Carlos Ruiz Zafron for modern Spainish lit. I'm REALLY lacking in Northern and Southern African lit, Middle Eastern, and Asian authors. I also should slip some Australian authors in there too.
I'm going to keep editing this as I add more titles to this list. I also will commit to writing up reviews of each book, so that I can share them with library patrons and keep them abreast of what I'm tackling this year.
Woo!

QUESTIONS FROM SAGEFACE
Apr. 26th, 2012 05:16 pm1) Out of everyone in the world, real, fake, or dead, who would you want the most as a work-out partner?
Okay, so I have to be honest - I keep reading this as "make out partner." But that isn't the question. Good lord, though - I never work out. I am so bad about it. I guess that I'd probably go with... um... someone who walks a lot, cause that's my preferred form of exercise. And it's best to walk fast and talk at the same time, to get your heart rate up... so someone I'd love to talk to... Dolly Madison. Voila.
2) MAKE UP A NEW AU FOR KINGDOM. RIGHT NOW. The first thing that comes to your mind!
When I first read these questions, I was listening to a Yelle song. So the thing that popped into my head at the moment was OMG PUT EVERYONE IN A FRENCH POP STAR SONG, OR WITH NATHAN BARNETT IN A VIDEO. But then the more I think about it, the less I like it. So I think it'd be more fun to put everyone in a Gladiator-esque AU. MUAHAHAHAHA.
3) Of everyone you know, who makes the best dessert?
SCOTT. ALWAYS SCOTT. AND HE IS MINE - ALL MINE!
4) If I gave you 15 million dollars, and with it you had to create a specialized library/gallery (like a Library of Women's History, Library of Revolutionary History, Library of Cute Cat Pictures), what would you make? What are your visions for designing it and visitor interactions?
Ooooo, this is interesting. I really like the idea of Women's History and the one of Revolutionary History. I think that if I were to focus on a historical issue, it would be women's everyday lives in frontier areas. Research and issues focused on that. I think it'd be amazing to build a collection focused on women who had to go out and build lives and homes for their families with minimal resources. I'm not as much designing layouts or visitor interactions, but I think that definitely allowing a wide variety of women to be represented in this collection, with the focus being on how badass they are. :D
5) Name your favorite three Twitter accounts to follow.
Funny: @TheBloggess, @GoddamnBatman, @GeorgeTakei
Political: @TheAtlantic, @BeardedStoner, @Slate
Library: @sabram, @wawoodworth, @pewresearch
Etc: @mashable
6) What do you think is the top issue plaguing the American educational system? What would you want to be changed within the next ten years?
Teaching to the test. Instead of teaching just the facts, people should be taught more HOW to think, and that it doesn't just HAPPEN, but you have to work for it. There are different learning styles, and educators should be well versed in how to best respond to a variety of students with different learning styles. Learning should be lifelong, as well.
7) Tell me about a vacation you've always wanted to take but haven't yet had the time/money to do.
I want to go on an African photo-safari. That would be so freaking amazing. I have wanted to go to South Africa for years. I'd also love to go see Patagonia, as well.
WHO WANTS QUESTIONS NOW?

Prompts!!!!
Mar. 4th, 2012 05:39 pmHere's for
tatterpixie !!! It's got a healthy bit of Deon thrown in there, because it's hilarious. For something as important as this, Peter would go to Dusty first before talking about it to ANYONE else. I just love the picture of the two of them going off to the jewelry store together, all secretive style. I might have to do a prequel to this where they're actually in one of the stores. :D Anyway! .
( Peter and the Pop Top Ring... )
And now for the follow up for
ru !!!!!
( MOAR PETER/ALICE FLUFF )

Feb. 28th, 2012 09:54 pmOKAY SO!
Because of the awesome that is
tatterpixie ,
impersona , and
ru have all given PROMPTS OF AWESOME (Sage's is pending... but I totally know it's going to be fucking incredible...), I'm going to try and return the awesome.
So Pix, Ru (x's 2, cause I'm counting your prompt for Sage AND mine, since Peter was in hers too...) and Sage... SEND ME SOME PROMPTS!!! :D ANYONE ELSE TOO!!! I DON'T PICK FAVORITES! :D
Any Kingdom, AU, characters, whatevs!!! Again, keeping in line with the other drabbles and such - detail is good! Or you can let me run with it! I promise to keep character deaths to a minimum. Unless that's what you want. Or whatever.
SCREW IT - EVERYONE COME AT ME BRO! :D

Feb. 3rd, 2012 11:09 amStuff that I've read today:
Rolling Stone: One Town's War on Gay Teens - Horribly sad piece, but it absolutely makes you recognize the importance of standing up and saying definitively that this IS NOT RIGHT and SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO ANYONE. As a person who was bullied through elementary and middle school but somehow made it through without losing my positive spirit, and also who has experienced the debilitating spiral that depression can cause at that age... it makes me mad that these kids had so few people to turn to for support. Their parents are amazing, and Justin's mom in particular is awesome, which makes his tragedy even more painful. There need to be more in the way of teachers and other officials stepping in and saying that BULLYING OF ANY KIND WILL NOT STAND. What really pisses me the fuck off is the school district initially saying that the suicides were not connected to bullying of any kind. Seriously? That is the biggest load of angering bullshit I have ever heard. It makes me want to hit something. Related: Cyberbullying: An International Perspective
From EdTrust: College Tuition Hikes Infographic - Hmph. Need reform, much?
Sheridan Libraries Blog: Background on the Elsevier Boycott - HELL YES. Open Access/Creative Commons for the win forever. I love the movement to freedom of information and thought that seems to be creeping in on Academia. A lot of my profs have been publishing articles through Third Monday (I think that's right), an open access journal. You still have to have a subscription to it, I think, but it's no where NEAR traditional scholarly journal costs. This is the way we should be moving with academia and intellectual discourse. Related: Librarians, Open Access Advocates "Vehemently Oppose" Research Works Act - The Digital Shift. Research Bought, then Paid For - NYT Opinion

Working on some drabbles, and
Holy crap, it's a FOX
Feb. 2nd, 2012 11:18 amWell, here this goes again. I had a huge freaking post, but now I'm going to have to revise it since I accidentally navigated away and wasn't able to bring up the saved draft. FML.
This weekend was about as awesome as awesome could be. Take the most fun weekend you can imagine and multiply it by like, 500 and you MIGHT be close.
kol came to visit, and we went to see Angie,
tatterpixie, and
thez in PA. SO MUCH GOOD FOOD. I wish we could have stayed their longer. All I know is that I will never see soft serve ice cream the same way again. Angie, your house is freaking incredible, and there is just such a great energy there. I can't wait till
impersona comes to visit and I get to go back. I will probably show up every couple of months anyway with a bottle of wine and beg entry with big sad puppy eyes.
Just as awesome as PA was, the drive up and back with Kol was amazing. She had some kick ass songs that she played, and on many occasions had me erupting in giggles. YOU KNOW THE SONG, DUDE.
This weekend was awesome for getting my writing groove going again. I've got a shitton of tags to work on and stories to finish, but my mentality right now is BRING IT ON!
Also awesome = crazy ideas for AU/CANON stories that came out of this weekend (Note, these are only ideas and really are meant to make people giggle. However - if anyone WANTS to make them official...):
Speaking of being better read, I'm going to post a bunch of links and some points from my Information and Human Rights class. These links are also kind of related to library science in general, but with more of a technical/digital spin to them. I haven't read all of these articles, but I plan to.
This is an interesting comment that came from last night's class during the discussion of the UN Universal Charter of Human Rights. I shared it with Kol, Sage, and Ingrid, but it's worth repeating. There are contradictions within this charter, i.e. the right to education, but also that parents have rights to decide what their children should do. For example, what about families that don't believe that their daughters should be educated? Is this a violation of human rights (in that education is being denied) or a victory for human rights (in that the importance of family and society decisions are recognized). It's an interesting thought, and when you expand it beyond that particular example, it becomes much more difficult to argue one point over the other.
I love hypotheticals like this. :)
Other interesting links I've come across in the past couple of days:
Should Overdrive sell itself to America's public libraries? I need to do more reading about this issue before I can really make an informed comment for or against this. I think it's a fascinating idea, and it'd be great to see public libraries own their digital content outright. Prices for renewing e-books subscriptions have gone up almost 700% for some libraries (will find this citation if asked for it), which is just plain ridiculous. Related: Crowdfunded e-books. Also: Digital Public Library of America
We Need Copyright 2.0 - Interesting oped about expanding copyrights. Also related to above series of links.
Articles I'm meaning to read:
Is Google Evil?
Twitter Censorship Causes Backlash
Privacy, Technology, and the Law - I'm totally going to mention this one in my next Human Rights class.
Apple's iPad and the Human Costs for Chinese Workers - This was mentioned in class, and it just makes me so freaking upset that these are the working conditions over there. And the worst part? It only decreases the value of iPads and iPhones by $50. Not to knock specifically on Apple. If this is the cost of our technology, I don't want to pay it. There needs to be something done. And anyway, with this considered, can we really be surprised that manufacturing jobs have been moved overseas? This is what happens when you cut out all regulation, GOP leaders.
Okay. I think I've posted quite enough for now. I should get to work or something.
;)

- Kill
BillMara - Lynn is the Bride, and Mara has stolen her Reed. :) MAJOR HOOK: DEON IN A SEXY NURSE OUTFIT! - Pat (the kitten from the bus story) should totally be a kleptomaniac kitty with a bra and underwear fetish. Mara and Lynn's skivvies go missing and end up in Dusty's room. Oh, look, Tasha suddenly shows up and finds them! Hehehehehe.
- Peter goes to Tasha for some badassery training, but Deon (and maybe Reed?) are trolling out of sight and making him lose his balance.
- While Reed is healing Lynn's broken leg, Lynn gets pissed at Mara for hovering and kicks her out of her room. MARA RAGE SMASH!
- Deon takes Peter to the bar (MAYBE THE FUBAR) to meet girls, but Peter just ends up getting trashed and silly.
- Val and Lynn take down a wig daemon at Loni's mom's boutique. So much for Val's fantasy about a blonde Lynn.
- I want to do a story with Raquel and Lynn, too, and am brainstorming ideas. They don't have much of an overlap, though. IS INTERESTING.

New Obsessions
Sep. 30th, 2011 02:34 pmSo I started digging through bits of my family tree, just out of curiosity, but now it's become a full blown project. I should start doing further updates on the progress of this.
But for the most part, the most annoying thing is how silly some people on Ancestry can be. It's like they've gone through and just found the first person that matches the name of their ancestor without comparing dates or locations or even their children's names. It's just very annoying, and makes finding accurate matches very difficult.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks I've found (other than other stupid people) involves my lack of knowledge on the dates of family members that are close to me (including my own grandparents). I have no clue when they were married, or when their parents died. Birth Certificates aren't made public until 75 years after the fact, and it takes 25 years for death certificates to be released too. Marriage and divorce records are public from the start, though. If you can find them. Spotty digitization of the records... blah.
Since the majority of my family comes from the area of my hometown, I'll have quite a bit of work to do over Christmas, including going through my grandmother's files and research. I should call my other grandmother and ask her to fill in some of the dates that I'm missing so that I can fill in those blanks.
I've been able to go pretty far back on some branches, though. For the most part, it looks like my dad's parents families were very early Americans in Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. That's great for me now, since those archives are within close reach for me now, and I can spend a few weekends sifting through those. And the National Archives are close, but going there can be overwhelming if you don't know exactly what you're after.
It's a fun adventure, and I'm hoping to eventually learn more about people's occupations so that I can pull some kind of narrative together to pass along to my family. At the very least, it'd be cool to make up some vignettes based on facts I know about people's lives in the times and places where they lived.

Aug. 29th, 2011 06:45 pmSo
impersona told me about this totally twisted time travel AU that
kol thought up, and yeah - needless to say we've just run with it. Here's something I wrote up for it. I was trying to think of something that would just scare the CRAP out of Deon, and came up with this.
I AM SORRY, LYNN!!!!!
Twisted Future AU
ALSO, I think that some icons need to be made for those of us on the east coast who survived the quake. Seriously, the only person I heard from faster checking up on everyone was my aunt down in Texas. So thanks
tatterpixie ,
thez and
ru for checking up on everyone. ALL OF YOUR AWESOME REIGNS.
