Feb. 3rd, 2012 11:09 amStuff that I've read today:
Rolling Stone: One Town's War on Gay Teens - Horribly sad piece, but it absolutely makes you recognize the importance of standing up and saying definitively that this IS NOT RIGHT and SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO ANYONE. As a person who was bullied through elementary and middle school but somehow made it through without losing my positive spirit, and also who has experienced the debilitating spiral that depression can cause at that age... it makes me mad that these kids had so few people to turn to for support. Their parents are amazing, and Justin's mom in particular is awesome, which makes his tragedy even more painful. There need to be more in the way of teachers and other officials stepping in and saying that BULLYING OF ANY KIND WILL NOT STAND. What really pisses me the fuck off is the school district initially saying that the suicides were not connected to bullying of any kind. Seriously? That is the biggest load of angering bullshit I have ever heard. It makes me want to hit something. Related: Cyberbullying: An International Perspective
From EdTrust: College Tuition Hikes Infographic - Hmph. Need reform, much?
Sheridan Libraries Blog: Background on the Elsevier Boycott - HELL YES. Open Access/Creative Commons for the win forever. I love the movement to freedom of information and thought that seems to be creeping in on Academia. A lot of my profs have been publishing articles through Third Monday (I think that's right), an open access journal. You still have to have a subscription to it, I think, but it's no where NEAR traditional scholarly journal costs. This is the way we should be moving with academia and intellectual discourse.
