Here's for
tatterpixie !!! It's got a healthy bit of Deon thrown in there, because it's hilarious. For something as important as this, Peter would go to Dusty first before talking about it to ANYONE else. I just love the picture of the two of them going off to the jewelry store together, all secretive style. I might have to do a prequel to this where they're actually in one of the stores. :D Anyway! .
Peter pulled his jacket out from behind Deon, who was sitting half on it. Deon and Dusty were watching some motorcycle race on TV, and wouldn’t have paid Peter any mind if Deon hadn’t glanced at him.
“Where are you going so dressed up?” Deon asked after doing a double take. Peter glanced down, as if he forgot what he was wearing. It’d been a while since he’d worn his nice black slacks, and he’d paired them with a light blue button down shirt.
“I’m going to go pick up Alice from the airport. She’s flying back from that conference she went to, and I might take her out to dinner.”
“Whatever, dude,” Deon said, turning back to the TV. Dusty, however, looked knowingly at Peter and grinned.
“You don’t get dressed up like that just to pick your girlfriend from the airport.” Dusty raised his eyebrows as Peter turned slightly red. “Are you going to ask her?”
Deon looked around at Dusty, then at Peter. “Wait, what?” Peter turned redder as Deon made the connections in his head. The time that Peter had been spending with Dusty, the nervousness of his old roommate in the past few weeks, and how frugal he’d been lately. “The fuck? Dude - are you... you’re going to propose to Alice?”
Peter turned a brighter red and didn’t say anything, just looked to Dusty to help him out. Dusty just grinned wider and pulled himself out of his chair, sticking out his hand for Peter to shake with a, “Congrats!”
Deon jumped up too and punched Peter’s shoulder. “You knocked her up, didn’t you? I told her to tell you to use a condom-” He grinned evilly, laughing as Peter sputtered indignantly.
“NO! Jesus, Deon! I did NOT knock her up!”
Dusty rolled his eyes at Deon, then shouldered him aside. “Let’s see it,” the older hunter said.
Peter dug into the pocket of his slacks and pulled out the telltale velvet box and handed it to Dusty. Deon crowded in again, ignoring Peter’s scowl. “Dude, I can’t believe this,” Deon said, still grinning wickedly. Peter looked like he wanted to slip between the floorboards and vanish, but there was a trace of excitement in his face too.
Dusty opened up the box to reveal a modest solitaire in a plain setting. He clapped Peter on the shoulder approvingly, and Deon snorted.
“That’s it? You can’t propose to her with that tiny thing! It looks like a pop top!” Deon said, and Peter punched him in the shoulder. But Peter’s grin was growing, and he knew his friend was joking.
“Shut up, Deon,” Dusty chimed in with a laugh, and handed the box back to Peter, who pocketed it carefully. “She’s totally going to flip, dude. I’m glad you went with the simple setting.”
“Yeah, me too. It just works better for her, I think,” Peter agreed. “Thanks for going to help me pick it out. Seriously, I really appreciate your help.”
“No problem, dude! It was actually kind of fun. Do you have a plan for asking her?” Dusty asked as Deon moved away suddenly to the kitchen.
“Not really... but I’ll take her out to dinner tonight. Probably there.” Peter rubbed the back of his head. “I haven’t been this nervous since I talked to her dad a month ago. And then today I pick this thing up, so yeah. It’s just a lot. Yeah, I’ll ask during dinner. I’m just nervous.”
“Why?” Deon asked, coming back into the room. “You two are the most sickeningly adorable couple ever. She’ll totally say yes.” He grinned and handed Peter a flask. “You’ll need this.”
Dusty laughed and shook his head. “Good luck, Peter. Bring her by afterwards - people will want to celebrate. I’ll cook up some excuse to get people over here, and then they can all be surprised.”
“Sounds good, Dusty,” Peter said, and straightened his shoulders. “Well, here goes!”
And now for the follow up for
ru !!!!!
Peter stood near the security exit as people filed by. Alice had texted him ten minutes ago saying that she had landed, so this must be people from her flight. At least, some of them definitely looked like they were from Denver.
His hands were sweating, and he felt as if his stomach were full of worms. He kept obsessively reaching down to make sure that the ring box was still in his pocket, and he felt like he was standing in the middle of a very bright spotlight.
Should he wait till they were at dinner? That’s what he thought at first, but now he wasn’t sure. What if she wanted to go home and order Chinese? What if he dropped the ring on her plate? What would he say? Would he have to get in the way of waiters and stuff? There were so many potential challenges, and it made his hands sweat all the more. He wiped them uncomfortably on his pants.
Then he saw Alice’s vivid red hair, and he relaxed slightly at the sight of her like he always did. She was chatting animatedly with an older couple - she made friends everywhere she went. They were probably her aisle-mates. He stepped away from the wall and waved to catch her attention.
Alice saw him and dashed his way with a grin. Peter caught her into a hug and kissed her hello. Had it only been a week that she’d been gone?
“Thank you so much for picking me up, Pete,” she said as she hugged his neck tight. “I had such a good time - there were so many people that were so nice and the sessions were just so informative and I learned so much. I met some really interesting people, too! I wish you could have come - Denver is just so nice, and the people are so friendly!”
Peter stepped back from the hug, and Alice turned, expecting that they would follow the crowd towards baggage. He took her hand and stopped her, though. “Hold up a second, Al,” he said, making up his mind right then.
“Did you drop something?” Alice asked, confused as to why they were standing still in the middle of the crowd of people.
Peter pulled the ring box out of his pocket then dropped down onto one knee. People stopped around them, seeing what was going on, and a small bubble of anticipatory hush surrounded them.
“Peter, what,” Alice started to ask, then yelped and covered her mouth with her free hand. “Ohmigod, Ohmigod, Ohmigod...”
Peter squeezed her fingers encouragingly and looked up at her. “Will you marry me, Alice?”
She squealed and jumped in place, tears in her eyes. “YES! YesyesyesyesyesyesYES!”
Peter let himself be hauled to his feet in a trademark Alice-hug, and she was still bouncing in place with excitement. The people around them were applauding. She squealed again, and Peter managed to get the ring on her finger through her excited antics.
He kissed her, glad that all the nervous worms in his stomach were gone, and there was nothing that would lessen his happy grin.
“Ohmigod, Peter! This... This is just... Eeek! Ohmigod, it’s PERFECT! You’re perfect! Ohmigod, I am so excited! I love you, Peter!” Alice exclaimed, looking at her ring and then pulling his face down to hers again.
With a laugh, Peter put an arm around her waist. “I love you too, Al.” He gave her a squeeze, then glanced back towards the baggage claim. “Let’s go get your stuff, then we can go celebrate.”
“Eeee! Yes! Oh, Peter!” Alice fell into step beside him, and continued to hug Peter all the way to the baggage claim, excitedly showing off her ring to fellow travelers as they went.
