FINALLY. This bit has been clanging around in my head for a couple of weeks now. Maybe that's why it was so easy to write?

Oh well! [personal profile] kol , THIS IS FOR YOU! :D

Coming home from a long trip

Something sounded strange. Lynn thought for a moment, then put her finger on what it was.

Silence.

The whole car was quiet.

It had only taken sheer exhaustion from a couple hours of frustration, cramped quarters, and tired muscles from the day’s walking and excitement to send them all to sleep. But asleep they were. Well, except for her and Reed, who was driving.

She went through a quick status update of the boys, just to be sure that they truly were all asleep. Carlo was in the front. Lynn had switched seats with him earlier because of his tendency towards carsickness. She could see the top of his head next to the seat belt cover, laying heavily against his pillow which was propped up by the window.

Behind him was Allie in the well-worn car seat. She slept like her dad. Was she already seven months old? Her brothers had worn her out, too, playing the game of who could make her giggle the longest from their goofiest voices. Lynn doubted she would even wake up when they got home and had to get her out of the seat and into her crib.

Her attention turned left towards Joe, who had fallen asleep with his earphones still on his ears. A faint song could be heard from them, but it was almost indistinguishable over the hum of the engine. Lynn’d have him help with getting Allie inside. He was a good big brother to all of them, and after the help he’d been at the park keeping an eye on his siblings, he deserved an easy job.

The biggest challenge when they got home would be getting Jackson and Ray to bed. Lynn knew from experience that they’d rather be horsing around than doing as they were told, which is why she was in the very back seat to begin with. She’d had to separate them a few hours ago when they started fighting over whatever three and four year old’s fought over. Not that one could deduce that from the current scene, as they both lay against her - Jackson on her shoulder and Ray on her leg.

All sleep states accounted for, Lynn let herself sigh and glance forward to the front of the car, where she could see Reed’s eyes in the rear view mirror. He glanced up and smiled, and she knew from that look that he had also taken note of the rare moment of silence.

Thirty minutes, he mouthed in response to her unspoken question. Lynn nodded and blew a kiss at the mirror, all at once glad and dismayed that their vacation was over, and this moment would end so soon. She settled her head back against the neck rest and smiled, and enjoyed the quiet time with her family.
